The mechanics are rather simple, as a disembodied soul you float around different areas and look for places that trigger memories that help you experience the life of the protagonist, Rick. The plot is fairly simple and does not take too many twists and turns, although I don't think that was the intention. This type of storytelling is more about finding intrigue and interest in the mundane. It would be the same experience as going through the personal items of a long deceased relative and piecing together the type of person they were.If you ever played the game Sarena, this game is very similar and has about the same design and mechaincs with more locations. The graphics on the first couple of levels are beautiful and match the mood of the story. The later levels could use a little more polish. The layout of the areas make logical sense, but you are quite aware you are playing a computer game and that fact breaks the immersion into the story. Although it is simple I think the developers are on to a type of storytelling that would work vary well in VR. Having large environments that allow a story to be told as you progress through them. It apprears this is a new venture for Green Sawdust, but I am curious to see if they will continue producing similar titles. Although the subject matter is rather dark, it is presented in a comforting way. I could see that this game may be able to help those recently suffeing loss help find some peace sharing how the characters are adapting to their in-game loss.Final verdict: If you like the occasional break from action, explosions, and gore to just sit back and have a storytelling experience this is worth a playthrough. It will give you a moments pause to refelct some deeper aspects of life and death.. Good game did a video on it. Its pretty fun. Can't so much say this was a game per se as there was very little, almost no, actual gaming to it. After Life - Story of a Father is a beautiful experience. Its not so much a game as a thought provoking exploration of how we come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Told from the point of view of Rick, a father who has died suddenly, we follow along on his journey as he remembers significant moments in his family's lives, and witness how each of them deal with his loss.This is an emotional story that is told in a sensitive and thoughtful way. It is incredibly well written and acted, and the music and visuals are really well done. Highly recommended.. I can't recommend this game in it's current state. There are many factors holding this title back honestly.Upon starting the game, I was met with the Settings menu , particularly the graphics settings. I chose Titan where as I have a specific machine for high end experiences and enviorments. Upon getting on with the game, the graphics are cartoonish at best and not what I was expecting. The feel is too much of one that the developer created this title as a personal project, but not with a lot of forethought or care.Many of the assets in the game tied in with the movement are simply props that are non collision (phantom based) and make them more of an afterthought in feel. The movement UI itself is fine but very unintuitive at times. The worst part I suppose, is the story and voice actors. I was not convinced in many cases to the subject matters brought up in the memories presented (one character protests doing something, but I really didn't feel their urgency in something that they professed to feel strongly about). It simply wasn't entertaining in that the story was just a generic rehash of topics really.. This is a game where you play as your spirit, soul, what have you, you are dead but you weren't supposed to die yet so you have to go back and discover and listen to your memories. Yea.The game has terrible voice acting which left me unmoved in any manner, left me unconvinced emotionally, so I couldn't really attach myself to the story, which is what this game is supposed to do. It's mostly about story, and it is presented in a walking simulator format.The graphics are terrible which is a huge negative, it is a walking simulator, one of the things you have to nail is a world that is pretty to look at.The soundtrack is in the same realm as most other walking simulator type games, not bad, not great, just... the norm.I played it for 20 minutes before I quit so I can't go super in-depth about the entire game.In short it is an ugly walking simulator with bad voice acting that is unable to convince you.I don't recommend this to anyone, but I wish the developer good luck in their future games, this seems like their first game.I hope they take more time on the next one and are more self-critical next time..
